Roamscapes Travel Resources

Travel Resources

Roamscapes was created to show you how you can travel in a way that’s better for the world and your wallet. After a decade of travel, these are the tools and platforms we recommend for creating your own one-of-a-kind adventure.

Step 1: Fly on cheap tickets and airfare deals

Flights are typically the most expensive part of any international trip, as well as being the scaffold of your itinerary. That’s why we like to start by scoring cheap flights.

The Secret Flying team are masters at finding unbelievably cheap flight deals and error fares – their email notifications helped me snag $420 tickets from Hong Kong to Vancouver for my Canada trip! Best of all, it’s free.

Kiwi is excellent for providing the cheapest flight routes that combine different airlines for multi-city/open-jaw flights, instead of only round-trip, single-airline options. Perfect for slow travel or long-term travel.

Roamscapes Travel Resources - Momondo

Sometimes Momondo offers better deals for less common flight routes; it really shines in Asia, so make sure you do a search here as well as on the other sites to find the best airfares.

Step 2. Stay at local homes, or boutique hotels and hostels

Whether you’re looking for a comfy home base or a luxury stay, location and price are just as important as the experience.

Airbnb logo

Airbnb is my favorite way to meet and live with locals as a solo traveler, and I highly recommend it for private rooms. If you prefer a whole apartment to yourself, check that you’re not flouting housing laws and disrupting local communities.

The widest selection of hotels, hostels, and apartments at competitive prices. I prefer it over other platforms because it advertises the final price – it doesn’t wait till checkout to add hidden taxes and fees (I’m looking at you, Agoda.)

If you’re looking to get more mileage from your hotel and hostel stays, booking with Kaligo may cost a bit more – but they give you up to 10x miles/dollar spent with over 50 frequent flyer/travel rewards programs!

Step 3. Explore with unique tours and activities

GetYourGuide logo

GetYourGuide is a reliable tour aggregator for quality experiences and activities around the world. It gets my vote for naming the tour operator on each listing (great transparency and credibility).

Klook supplies the largest inventory of day trips, transport passes, and attraction tickets in Asia – mostly at a discount compared to paying on the spot, so you save both time and money.
